I confess. I’ve tried to “perfect” my period.
As a “recovering perfectionist” I’ve reflected a great deal on my perfectionist tendencies and how they’ve affected my health and my life.
In short, the effect has been one of greater negative than positive outcome.
The tricky part about perfectionism is that it can sneak up on us!
It can disguise itself in its attempts to “perfect” something that’s good for us.
Let’s say for example such as cleaning up our diet, exercising more regularly, or even meditating!
So that brings up a perhaps strange but very relevant question, “Is there such thing as a perfect period?”
I’d say there is such thing as a healthy period that may be stressed by perfectionist tendencies.
This then defeats the purpose of optimizing menstrual health because trying to be perfect is stressful!
As with most disturbances, STRESS is the root cause of imbalance and dis-ease.
If a woman is trying to make her period better, with less cramps, bloating, fatigue, but finds that she doesn’t take action because things aren’t just as she’d like them to be or how she feels she needs them to be, it’s time for an intervention!
Even if it’s not a full case of perfectionism, resistance is keeping a woman from experiencing less discomfort and from having much more FUN and enjoyment in her life!
If you’re waiting to finish that project at work…
If you’re waiting for your kids to go to sleep…
If you’re waiting to lose those last 5 pounds…
WHAT IS BEING PUT ON HOLD IS YOUR PEACE OF BODY, MIND AND SOUL.
If you’re thinking, I’ll start to meditate when…
I’ll start my new exercise routine when…
I’ll buy that outfit I really like when…
YOUR HAPPINESS IS BEING DELAYED WHEN YOU COULD SAVOR IT RIGHT NOW.
When a woman delays her self care or denies herself of her desires because the time, day, situation isn’t just right, this only continues to create further period pain, cramps, mood swings and discomfort.
As we approach the Autumn Equinox on September 22nd, this is the perfect time to reconnect with ourselves!
It’s a great time to reflect on all that has happened in the year thus far and to prepare with only what we truly need for the winter up ahead.
Our ancestors would have gathered only their warmest clothes and harvested food for the cold winter months.
In our modern times, we are over stimulated by so many things that many women have lost this connection to the essential, and to nature’s cycles as a guide for their own divine cyclical nature each month.
As the North prepares for fall foliage and the changing of seasons, this is a great time to re-set, re-commit to intentions and reflect on only what is truly needed to promote optimal health and well being.
Here are helpful questions to encourage deeper insight and action:
What do I most desire to feel healthy?
What do I most desire to feel happy?
What are 3 actions that I can take right now?
What can I let go of to improve my health and well being?
“When you begin to touch your heart or let your heart be touched, you begin to discover that it’s bottomless, that it doesn’t have any resolution, that this heart is huge, vast, and limitless. You begin to discover how much warmth and gentleness is there, as well as how much space.” ~Pema Chodron
